New Mexico Junior Academy of Science Paper Competition

Announcing the 2013 NMJAS regional paper competition: Call for student submissions!

We are currently seeking submissions for the 2013 Junior Academy of Science Paper Competition to be held on UNM campus March 14th (the night before the Regional Science Fair at UNM). This competition is open to students in grades 6-8 (Junior Division) and those in grades 9-12 (Senior Division) in the Central New Mexico Region and will be held at UNM's Johnson Center. Students write a paper of no more than 1500 words and present a PowerPoint presentation of 10 minutes or less to a panel of judges. Student work details their scientific research and so is not simply a literary review of a topic.

This is a wonderful opportunity for young scientists to write up their research and present it in front of a panel of judges and an audience of parents and friends. Winners of this regional competition can go on to compete at the state and national levels. Details of this competition can be found at the following websites:

Competition Dates:

Final papers are due by: March 1st , 2013 by midnight.

PowerPoint Presentations are due by: March 9th, 2013 by midnight

Oral Competition will be held on: March 14th, 2013 from 4 to finish.

Important Details:  

•·         Students should arrive at least 1/2 hour early for JAS to set up their PowerPoints and pay their entrance fee. The fee is 6$ and should be in the form of a check made out to: NMAS.

•·         Please note that the Regional Science Fair setup overlaps our competition. Students competing in the JAS can set up for Regionals before  or after the JAS Oral Competition (from 3 pm – 7 pm March, 14th).

•·         Students will need to follow the instructions relating to the paper and presentation carefully. These instructions can be found on the NMAS website: http://www.nmas.org/junior.html
